Two separate shipments totaling nearly 3,000 pounds of cocaine — and likely headed toward South Florida — were confiscated and nine suspected drug smugglers were caught in the Caribbean, Coast Guard officials said on Monday.
Crewmembers of the North Carolina-based cutter Diligence performed the busts last month while patrolling the area. The cocaine was offloaded in Key West.
Coast Guard officials worked with French and Dutch authorities in carrying out the interdictions, said the cutter’s commanding officer, Douglas Goodwin.
According to the Coast Guard, the larger of the two hauls happened on Sept. 3, when crew members boarded a 35-foot fishing vessel in the western Caribbean and found suspicious packages that tested positive for cocaine.
